Upta Boston

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Off to Boston for a four day "meeting with food" as MG would call it.  As much as I look forward to getting away from work, I don't want to leave the family or C'Ville.  And I suspect the sh|t backlog at work will increase in my and J's absence.  At least there's no way I can drink as much beer with my employer as I can with R and the Stewarts.

You Know What?

I gotta fix the work thing.  I'm learning stuff, days go by fast, I like the work, believe in what we do, know it'll be a success, heck I've even got a real live office.  But I'm just not feeling right.  Not kicking ass.  Not in the groove with my peers. I'm pretty sure some of these people even think I'm a d|ck!  Whoa.  As far from the truth as possible but I'm having a hard time getting that message out. I just had such a sweet run with work for a while that I kinda forgot how it can be every now and then.

Still loving C'Ville. Thank God I didn't take that job in Tejas.

Let’s Hope Not

So many of my friends just seem to be getting back to normal lately, this just doesn't seem fair.

New Orleans, still down and out from last year's assault by Hurricane Katrina, is the U.S. city most likely to be struck by hurricane force winds during the 2006 storm season, a researcher said on Wednesday.

The forecast gives New Orleans a nearly 30 percent chance of being hit by a hurricane and a one in 10 chance the storm will be a Category 3 or stronger, meaning sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour (178 km per hour), said Chuck Watson of Kinetic Analysis Corp., Savannah, Georgia a risk assessment firm.

"Given the state of the infrastructure down there and the levees, gosh, that's just not good news. But that's what the climate signals look like," Watson said.

Going To Bed Here In A Second

But it looks like Willy Wonka may be pulling it out of his ass. And you know what? He deserves it. Sure maybe Moon's kid could do better, but Ray Ray's been there.  And that's worth something.

Damn, Damn, Damn

I just deleted a post.  Many Bass Ales and keyboarding in the dark perhaps not the best idea.  At least I'm not going to do one of my loady bummer posts.  But as I post so rarely now, I just feel like I gotta get it out when I do, so here is the PowerPoint version:

  • Running first 5k tomorrow since thing
    • Trained by getting loady
    • Radiators playing after race so seems reasonable
    • Meeting great people in C'Ville
    • Going to bring more great people here:
      • bcmcg (Jilly McJillerton, we found you acting people and chums for the JackAttack)
      • NSA Guy - when you are done recording my calls you must know that you will get strong arm when you come in June (heck you wouldn't be coming if you didn't want it)
      • Roget's Thesaurus and xiitone you are on the list, don't worry I'm just going for the easy scores early
      • bdb haven't forgotten you

Trying To Be A Good Little Poster

      Sunday, May 14th, 2006

But it’s hard my time with the squareheaded girlfriend at home is pretty limited.

      • Cool Flash movie of how NOLA flooded.
      • Best NOLA related post I’ve read in a while.
      • Chris Rose has a book out that compiles his post Katrina columns. Even though I’ve read every single one of them, I’ll be buying the book - you should too. Hard to believe this guy was the entertainment writer in a previous life.
      • I got added to HS’s blogroll. I have to remember to ask her what a fourgrape is.
      • Great weekend (damn these are getting habit forming) fun at the Pavilion on Friday and then a nice little unplanned get together at the house on Saturday. Spent a slow and pleasant Mother’s Day in Lynchburg, VA at the children’s museum. Route 29 is a beatiful drive even in the rain.
      • Wayne - that Drive by Truckers show we listened to is on Archive.org
      • I think bcmcg tried a well timed “your mom” on me today. Sadly, I was a little bit hungover and I missed it

      Sigh.

From a mailing list I'm on. I know neither the guy who posted to the listserv nor the dude who made the slideshow.

Those of you not fortunate enough to attend the Fest this year have been curious as to what New Orleans looks like, how are the people and what did the Fairgrounds look like. The small part of the city that most of us ran amok in was relatively pristine compared to the total devastation experienced in the other 80% of the city. That any American city, let alone the most culturally and historically significant city in the nation, can look like this so many months after a disaster of biblical proportion is shameful. The total lack of concern visited on New Orleans by our government is criminal. The one thing that rocked my soul more than any other last weekend was the incredible grace and humility with which the native New Orleanians received their visitors last weekend. They waved and they smiled and they embraced us. Not harsh word nor a word of expectation or entitilement was spoken. Our taxi drivers native to the city were a very special bunch. They were always ready with a smile, a food tip or a joke and it breaks my heart that our country has turned it's back on them and their city. We are a better People and a greater nation than our government has demonstrated in it's shameful ignorance of New Orleans.

I do not know Rob Rueteman. My friend who passed this on to me assures me that it is his desire that this photo show be shared with as many people as possible so pass it on. And when you have done so, think about what you can do to wake up your friends, neighbors, families and, most all your federal representatives, to the ongoing tragedy that is overtaking New Orleans.

Falling Out Of A Freakin’ Tree?

      Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

WTF Keith?  I mean I guess it could be hard to tell, but jeez what a crap thing to happen to one of my fav rock stars.

Doctors are concerned Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards could suffer from brain damage after undergoing two surgeries following a fall while holidaying in Fiji, the New Zealand Herald reported on Wednesday.

Okay, Shotgun Post Going On Here

      Friday, May 5th, 2006

I never post anymore.  Sorry.  Lack of disaster, lack of drinking too much and general happiness precludes it I guess.  But there's a few of you out there that like to tune in, so I'm gonna try to be better.

      • Dude, people up here just don't drink in the street right.  Perhaps I'm early, for sure I am hoping, but I restocked the beer fridge with Abita (and I found some Geary's too!) pretty much right after I got off the phone to you.
      • Looks like I can ride my bike to work without getting killed. On a related note, I now have three pairs of shoes and all my bikes (yeah, I have more than one) sport clipless pedals.  And I can think of now is some Mavic rims for the fast bike.  What's become of me?
      • Some jokes just write themselves.
      • I have to wonder, is this guy's fame based on the fact that people love to watch the slow motion trainwreck?  Every generation has their Lizard King I suppose.
      • Some of you are gonna take this the wrong way, but what you can you do?  I'm feeling good that I'm not in Louisiana, because.  Well just because.  Wish I saw Bruce however.
      • My dad was right - Jerry Jeff kicks ass

Discouraging News With Less Than Thirty Days To Go

      Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

Wonder no more where tomorrow's FEMA leadership will come from.

Where's Louisiana? Don't ask young people. Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of the damage from Hurricane Katrina, nearly one-third of young Americans recently polled couldn't locate Louisiana on a map and nearly half were unable to identify Mississippi.
